Japan Secures Final Spot by Defeating South Korea 4-1 in Womens Asian Cup Semifinal

Sydney, March 19: In a stunning performance, Japan triumphed over South Korea with a score of 4-1 in the semifinals of the Women’s Asian Cup 2026. The match took place at Stadium Australia on Wednesday, solidifying Japan’s place in the final against the host nation, Australia.

Under the guidance of coach Nils Nielsen, Japan dominated the game for most of the match. They scored two goals in each half, marking their seventh appearance in the finals. This upcoming title match will be a repeat of the finals in 2014 and 2018, both of which Japan won.

South Korea, led by Shin Sang-woo, made several changes to their starting lineup following their quarterfinal victory over Uzbekistan. In contrast, Japan reinstated key players, including goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita, defender Saki Kumagai, and top scorer Riko Ueki.

Japan started the match with great intensity and came close to taking the lead early on. They had a near miss following an impressive offensive play. However, they didn’t have to wait long to score. In the 15th minute, a mistake by the South Korean defense under pressure allowed Fuka Nagano to seize the ball. She passed it to Ueki, who calmly slotted it into the net.

Shortly after, South Korea had a chance to respond but failed to convert. In the 25th minute, Mika Hamano skillfully deceived defenders and found the upper corner of the goal from a difficult angle, doubling Japan’s lead.

In hopes of a comeback, South Korea made aggressive changes at halftime, but Japan continued to create better opportunities. Their efforts paid off in the 75th minute when Kumagai capitalized on a goalkeeper error, scoring with a header from a corner kick.

Three minutes later, South Korea reduced the deficit with a goal from Kang Che-rim. This calm and precise finish ended Japan’s streak of advancing without conceding a goal in the tournament. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed. In the 81st minute, substitute Remina Chiba sealed the match with a brilliant finish on a counterattack, ensuring Japan’s place in the final.
