Jammu and Kashmir Unveils 2026 Homestay Policy to Boost Rural Tourism
The Jammu and Kashmir government has introduced a new homestay policy aimed at promoting sustainable tourism in rural areas.

Srinagar, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : The Jammu and Kashmir government has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism and local entrepreneurship. Following the approval of the council of ministers, the Jammu and Kashmir Homestay Policy 2026 has been officially announced. This development was shared via a post on the Chief Minister‘s office’s official social media account.
The Chief Minister’s office stated, “A crucial step towards sustainable tourism and local entrepreneurship in Jammu and Kashmir. The government has notified the Jammu and Kashmir Homestay Policy 2026 after the council of ministers’ approval.”
This new policy aims to create a straightforward framework for the expansion of quality tourist accommodations, particularly in rural, border, heritage, and emerging tourist destinations. The government’s objective is to ensure that the benefits of tourism extend beyond well-known sites to include remote villages and border areas.
One of the policy’s standout features is its hassle-free registration process. Homestays will be registered under Silver and Gold categories, allowing local homeowners to easily host tourists. This initiative not only showcases Jammu and Kashmir’s rich culture and hospitality but also creates sustainable livelihood opportunities for residents.
Additionally, the policy includes a provision for the registration of residential properties that are not used by families for their own residence. Such properties can be registered as bed and breakfast establishments. This will further enhance hospitality infrastructure and provide families with additional income opportunities.
The government believes this policy will help shift tourism beyond traditional sites. It aims to strengthen local economies, promote heritage, and ensure that the benefits of tourism reach all communities in Jammu and Kashmir.
In recent years, the region has seen a consistent increase in tourist numbers. Due to a lack of available accommodations in hotels and guesthouses, tourists often face challenges. The new homestay policy is expected to address this issue while providing visitors with the unique experience of staying with local families.
