Washington: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held separate meetings with US Senator Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Baesent on February 4, focusing on the broad spectrum of the India-US strategic and economic partnership.
After meeting Senator Rubio, Jaishankar wrote on the social media platform X, “It was a pleasure to meet US Senator Rubio this afternoon. We had detailed discussions on our bilateral cooperation agenda and regional as well as global issues. The aspects of the India-US strategic partnership we covered include trade, energy, nuclear, defence, critical minerals, and technology. We agreed to hold meetings soon through various mechanisms to further our shared interests.”
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders discussed formalising bilateral cooperation in the exploration, mining, and processing of critical minerals, a sector emerging as a central pillar of India-US economic and strategic relations.
The meeting took place a day after President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a trade agreement aimed at reducing barriers and expanding market access between the world’s two largest democracies. The statement noted that Secretary Rubio and Minister Jaishankar welcomed the agreement and emphasised the importance of working together to open new economic opportunities and advance shared energy security goals.
The discussions also focused on the regional and multilateral dimensions of the partnership. Rubio and Jaishankar concluded their meeting by reaffirming their commitment to expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation through security dialogues. They recognised that a prosperous Indo-Pacific region is vital for advancing shared interests.
Earlier, Jaishankar also met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Baesent in Washington. Sharing a photograph of the meeting on X, the External Affairs Minister wrote, “Pleasure meeting US Treasury Secretary Scott Baesent in Washington. We had a productive discussion on advancing India-US economic partnership and strategic cooperation.”
