New Delhi, March 15: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has once again criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy while praising former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
In a post on X, Ramesh stated, “In the late 1990s, India began exploring investment opportunities at Iran’s Chabahar port under the India-Afghanistan-Iran cooperation strategy. Following the 16th Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran, Dr. Manmohan Singh accelerated these plans, and in May 2013, the Union Cabinet approved an initial investment of $115 million for Chabahar. It is important to remember that this decision was made while India was taking significant steps to implement the India-US nuclear agreement signed in October 2008.”
Ramesh further noted, “Subsequently, in October 2014, the Modi government, as is its custom, rebranded Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Chabahar initiative as part of Modi’s vision. The 2026-27 budget did not allocate any funds for Chabahar. Does this mean India has withdrawn from this project, or have its investment commitments been fulfilled for now? In any case, Chabahar, located about 170 kilometers west of the Gwadar port built by China in Pakistan, is no longer in focus. This marks a second strategic setback for India’s Central Asian diplomacy, following the closure of the airbase in Ayni near Dushanbe, Tajikistan.”
Additionally, late on March 14, Ramesh posted on X, “Six months ago, Congress condemned Sonam Wangchuk’s decision. Now, the Modi government has completely reversed its stance by canceling the NSA’s action against Wangchuk. The government must apologize not only to Wangchuk and his family but also to the people of Ladakh. All those detained for peaceful and democratic protests should be released immediately.”
