Beirut, March 21: In the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East, Iranian attacks have wreaked havoc while Israel intensifies its operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to government reports, at least 20 individuals were killed and 57 others injured in Israeli airstrikes over the past 24 hours.
A new report released on Friday indicates that since the escalation of fighting on March 2, the total death toll has reached 1,021, with 2,641 people injured. The ongoing attacks have led to a significant increase in displacement, forcing more individuals to abandon their homes. Currently, 134,616 people are displaced across 644 centers nationwide.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the deteriorating humanitarian situation amid continuous airstrikes has hampered efforts to shelter the displaced. Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel from southern Lebanon for the first time since the ceasefire on November 27, 2024. Following this, clashes resumed on March 2, prompting Israel to conduct a vigorous military campaign targeting various regions across the country.
Earlier on Wednesday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed concerns over increased heavy gunfire, aerial, and ground activities, as well as the growing presence of the Israeli military within Lebanese territory.
In a statement, UNIFIL indicated that the violent clashes overnight signal a further deterioration of conditions between Lebanon and Israel. The organization also raised concerns that the so-called evacuation orders being issued by the conflicting parties are affecting civilians living on both sides of the Blue Line.
UNIFIL reiterated its call for all parties to adhere to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and to completely cease hostilities, emphasizing that this is the only path to achieving lasting stability. The force is currently deployed in southern Lebanon, monitoring and reporting violations, maintaining communication with relevant parties, and facilitating humanitarian assistance where possible to ensure the safety of civilians.
