Baghdad has appealed to the European Union (EU) to actively share the responsibility for the security and upkeep of Islamic State (IS) detainees, stating that Iraq cannot bear the entire financial burden alone. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized that the issue concerns all involved nations and requires a collective approach.
According to an official statement from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Hussein conveyed these views during a phone conversation with the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. The discussion focused on the current situation in Syria, particularly concerns over recent escapes of IS members from prisons controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Both leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining a ceasefire in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province and stressed the need for peaceful resolution of ongoing disputes. They also recognized the key role Europe can play in supporting negotiations between the SDF and the Syrian interim government, aiming to reach binding agreements between the parties.
Hussein provided updates on his recent visit to Iran and shared perspectives on EU-Iraq relations amid the region’s “tense and dangerous” conditions. Meanwhile, the EU representative expressed appreciation for Iraq’s initial agreement to accept IS prisoners transferred from Syria.
Notably, Iraq recently accepted the first batch of 150 IS detainees relocated from Syria. According to the US Central Command, these prisoners were moved from a detention center in Hasakah to a secure facility in Iraq. This transfer is part of a broader plan to relocate approximately 7,000 IS inmates to Iraqi-controlled prisons in the future.
In a related development, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani appealed to countries worldwide, especially EU member states, to repatriate their citizens detained in connection with IS during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron.
