Tehran, March 27: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States and Israel of committing atrocities. He called on nations worldwide to raise their voices against these actions. During a session at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Araghchi referenced the brutal attack on the Shazareh Tayebeh Primary School in Minab, stating that such violence cannot be justified or ignored. He emphasized that silence and indifference towards this attack are unacceptable, describing it as a deliberate act of cruelty. He warned that the fundamental values of the United Nations and the entire framework of human rights are under serious threat.
Araghchi stated, “Iran finds itself caught in an illegal war imposed by two nuclear powers, the US and Israel. This attack is clearly unprovoked and extremely brutal.” He noted that the assault began on February 28 while diplomatic efforts were underway to address US concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program. For the second time in nine months, diplomacy has been undermined by their actions.
He highlighted one of the most alarming examples of this violence: the calculated attack on the Shazareh Tayebeh Primary School in southern Iran, where over 175 students and teachers were deliberately and brutally killed. This incident is merely a glimpse of a larger crisis, which includes serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law, normalizing egregious crimes without accountability.
The foreign minister criticized the US and Israel for claiming to possess advanced technology and precise military systems. He argued that if they assert that the attack was not premeditated, such claims should not be taken seriously. Targeting a school constitutes a war crime and an affront to humanity that must be unequivocally condemned, with clear accountability for the perpetrators.
In a video statement, Araghchi insisted that this tragic event cannot be justified, concealed, or overlooked. The attack on the Shazareh Tayebeh School was neither an accident nor a misunderstanding. He stated that the US’s contradictory statements attempting to absolve themselves of responsibility do not hold water. Condemning such brutal attacks on innocent civilians seeking education is not only a legal obligation within the realm of human rights; it is a moral imperative.
He added, “The Shazareh Tayebeh Primary School is not the sole victim of the heinous crimes committed by the US and Israel during this illegal war over the past twenty-seven days. The attackers have systematically violated human rights and international humanitarian law in unprecedented and brutal ways. They have targeted civilians and essential infrastructure without regard for the laws of war or the fundamental principles of humanity and civilization. Over 600 schools across Iran have been destroyed or damaged, resulting in the deaths or injuries of more than a thousand students and teachers. The attackers boast of their ruthlessness and threaten to strike Iran’s critical infrastructure, targeting hospitals, ambulances, medical personnel, and essential resources.”
Criticizing the actions of the US and Israel, he stated that terms like “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity” do not adequately convey the severity of their atrocities. The methods of targeting and their rhetoric leave no doubt about their clear intent to commit genocide.
Araghchi concluded, “The unjust and arbitrary war waged by the US and Israel against the noble people of Iran is a direct consequence of silence regarding past chaos and crimes in occupied Palestine, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Indifference and silence in the face of injustice will not bring peace and security; rather, it will lead to greater insecurity and further violations of rights. The fundamental values of the United Nations and the entire framework of human rights are in serious jeopardy.”
The Iranian foreign minister urged all nations to speak out against the attacks by the US and Israel, stating, “You must openly condemn the aggressors and demonstrate that the community of nations and the collective conscience of humanity will hold them accountable for the heinous crimes against the people of Iran. Iran has never sought war. The Iranian people are a peaceful and dignified nation, heirs to one of the world’s richest civilizations. However, they have shown a firm resolve to defend themselves against ruthless aggressors who recognize no limits in their crimes; this defense will continue as long as necessary.”
