Tehran, March 14: Iran’s Chief Commander Amir Hatami has stated that the country will respond decisively to the recent attack on its naval vessel in the Indian Ocean. The assault resulted in the tragic loss of over 100 sailors aboard the IRIS Dena.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the vessel was returning to Iran after completing military exercises when it was struck. At the time of the attack, the ship was not engaged in any combat operations.
Hatami emphasized, “The sacrifice of the Dena and its crew will always be remembered in the history of the Iranian Navy. Iran will defend its maritime borders and strengthen its naval forces.”
The attack on the IRIS Dena occurred on the morning of March 4, 2026, near the coastal city of Galle in Sri Lanka. This small Iranian warship was returning from participating in the 2026 International Fleet Review held in Visakhapatnam, India. The frigate-class vessel took part in a multinational naval operation involving approximately 74 countries. Notably, the United States was not part of this exercise, having decided not to participate shortly before its commencement.
Reports indicate that the Dena was attacked while returning from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned the attack and the sinking of the IRIS Dena, labeling it as “barbarism at sea.”
