Iran Rejects Talks with the U.S., Claims Only Message Exchanges Occurred via Allies

Tehran, March 26: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi stated that in recent days, various messages have been exchanged between Iran and the United States through intermediaries. However, he emphasized that since the onset of American and Israeli attacks at the end of last month, Tehran has not engaged in any direct discussions with Washington.

In an interview with the state television channel IRIB, Araghchi remarked, “For several days now, the American side has been sending different messages through various intermediaries. When messages are sent to us via friendly nations and we clarify our position or issue necessary warnings in response, this cannot be termed as negotiations or dialogue. It is merely an exchange of messages through our friends, and we have reiterated our principled stance.”

According to Xinhua News Agency, he further indicated that some messages included warnings from Iran to the U.S. against attacking its infrastructure, which led Washington to retract its warning of an attack on Iranian power plants within 48 hours.

Araghchi asserted that Iran does not seek war, emphasizing, “We did not initiate this war, and we want to end it in a manner that prevents its recurrence.” He stated that Iran does not desire a ceasefire, as it would only lead to a repetitive cycle of negotiations, warfare, and then peace, insisting that the end of this conflict must be on Iran’s terms.

He also mentioned that Iran’s current policy is to continue resistance and defend the nation, with no plans for negotiations. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, he noted that this waterway is considered part of Iran and Oman’s territorial waters. He added that Iran is studying new arrangements for safe passage through the strait.

These comments from the Iranian Foreign Minister follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Tehran is negotiating with the United States and seeking an agreement to end the war.

On February 28, Israel and the U.S. conducted joint attacks on Tehran and several other Iranian cities, resulting in the deaths of Iran’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei, senior military commanders, and civilians.

In retaliation, Iran launched a series of missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli and American bases and assets in the Middle East, establishing strict control over the Strait of Hormuz and denying safe passage to vessels associated with Israel and the U.S.
