Tel Aviv, March 22: Iran has executed a significant missile attack on Israel’s nuclear facility. The assault targeted the southern cities of Israel, specifically the nuclear site in Dimona and the city of Arad. This marks the first time since the attacks began on February 28 that Iran has aimed at Israel’s nuclear infrastructure. Over 100 individuals have been injured, with 11 reported in serious condition.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with the mayor of Arad to assess the situation. According to the Israeli government’s press office, Netanyahu stated, “This has been a very difficult evening in our fight for the future. I just spoke with Mayor Ya’ir Miyan of Arad and asked him to convey our prayers for the recovery of the injured on behalf of all Israeli citizens. I have instructed my office’s Director General to coordinate with all government ministries to provide necessary assistance.”
Netanyahu further expressed his support for the emergency and rescue teams working on the ground and urged everyone to follow the Home Front Command’s instructions. “We are determined to continue attacking our enemies on all fronts,” he added.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that it is closely monitoring reports of the missile incident in Dimona. The IAEA stated that there has been no damage to Israel’s sensitive nuclear research infrastructure. In a post on X, the agency noted it was aware of reports regarding missile impacts in the city but found “no indication of damage to the Negev Nuclear Research Center.”
This facility is closely linked to Israel’s nuclear program. The IAEA further indicated that information from neighboring countries revealed no unusual radiation levels following the incident. Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized the need for increased military control, particularly around nuclear facilities, to prevent any escalation that could lead to a nuclear safety crisis.
This warning comes amid rising tensions in the region and reports of new attacks on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
According to Israeli media outlet Times of Israel, among those seriously injured in the southern attacks is a 12-year-old boy who was hit by shrapnel from the Dimona attack and a 5-year-old girl injured in the subsequent attack in Arad. On Saturday, Iran launched multiple strikes in the Dimona area.
Iran’s state media reported that these attacks were aimed at Israel’s nuclear research facility, located approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Dimona and 30 kilometers (18.5 miles) from Arad. The U.S. and Israel have consistently targeted Iran to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons, making the recent missile strikes on Israeli nuclear centers appear as acts of retaliation from Iran.
