Tehran, April 20: Iran’s state news agency IRNA has reported that the country has refused to participate in the second round of peace talks with the United States. These discussions were expected to take place soon in Pakistan.
The agency stated on its English account on the social media platform ‘X’ that Iran’s absence from the second round of talks is due to the U.S.’s “excessive demands, unrealistic expectations, frequent changes in stance, contradictory statements, and maritime blockade.” Iran believes that this blockade violates the ceasefire agreement.
IRNA also clarified that reports regarding the second round of peace talks between Iran and the U.S. in Islamabad are inaccurate. This information was corroborated by a report published in Persian by the Xinhua news agency.
The agency labeled the U.S. reports as “media games” and a “blame-shifting strategy” aimed at pressuring Iran. It stated that the U.S.’s “excessive, unreasonable, and impractical demands, along with a frequently changing stance, contradictory statements, and the alleged maritime blockade” have hindered progress in the negotiations.
IRNA further noted that, given the current circumstances, the likelihood of achieving positive outcomes from discussions is very low.
On February 28, Israel and the U.S. jointly attacked Tehran and several other cities in Iran, resulting in the deaths of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, numerous senior military officials, and civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone strikes against Israeli and U.S. positions in the Middle East and tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was established on April 8, followed by lengthy discussions between the two parties in Islamabad on April 11 and 12. However, these talks did not yield success, leading the U.S. to implement its blockade on maritime routes. Reports indicated that another round of peace talks was anticipated soon in Pakistan.
