Tehran, March 24: Iran has appointed a new head of the National Security Council following the death of Ali Larijani. Larijani was killed in an airstrike on March 17.
According to Iran’s semi-official news agency Mehr, Mohammad Bagher Jolghadr has been named the new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The announcement was made by Mohammad Mahdi Tabatabai, deputy for communications and information at the presidential office, on Tuesday.
This appointment received the approval of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, and was ordered by President Masoud Pajehshkian. Jolghadr will succeed Larijani, who, along with his son Morteza Larijani and several bodyguards, lost his life in the tragic incident.
Larijani was regarded as a key architect of Iran’s defense, nuclear, and foreign policies. Just hours after Israeli claims regarding the airstrike, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed Larijani’s death, labeling it a cowardly act.
The ministry stated that Larijani’s death was not merely a murder but a martyrdom for Iran. He was “martyred” during an attack by the United States and Israeli forces in a residential area of Tehran.
The ministry described Larijani as a dedicated philosopher, profound thinker, patriotic politician, and a loyal companion of the martyr leader of the Islamic Revolution, Khamenei, as well as a true servant of the nation.
