IPL 2026: Punjab Kings Soar to the Top as Rain Cancels KKR vs PBKS Match

New Delhi, April 7: The Kolkata Knight Riders finally made their mark in IPL 2026, securing their first point after their match against Punjab Kings was abandoned due to rain at Eden Gardens. Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, KKR shared a point with Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings after just 22 deliveries were bowled before the incessant rain and a soggy outfield forced the match to be called off.

With this outcome, Punjab Kings ascended to the top of the IPL 2026 points table. They now hold the No. 1 spot with five points from three matches, boasting two wins and one no result this season.

For KKR, the abandoned match at least marked a positive start after a challenging beginning to their campaign. Rahane, the home side captain, won the toss and chose to bat, but his decision quickly backfired. Australian pacer Xavier Bartlett struck in the second over, dismissing opener Finn Allen (6) and Cameron Green (4) in rapid succession, leaving KKR struggling at 16 for two.

Rahane (8 not out) and young wicketkeeper-batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi (7 not out) were attempting to stabilize the innings when rain interrupted play at 25 for two after just 3.4 overs.

With conditions failing to improve and the outfield remaining wet, the umpires ultimately decided to call off the match.

Punjab Kings will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 11, while KKR is set to take on Lucknow Super Giants on April 9.
