IPL 2026: Kolkata Faces Tough Challenge Against Punjab Kings Amid Rain Threat

Kolkata, April 6: The 12th match of IPL 2026 will see Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) this evening at Eden Gardens. Securing two points by defeating Punjab at their home ground poses a significant challenge for KKR.

KKR has had a rocky start to IPL 2026, currently sitting at ninth place in the standings after losing their first two matches. They faced a six-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in their opener. Subsequently, KKR lost by 65 runs to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens. Therefore, the upcoming match against Punjab is crucial for KKR, led by Ajinkya Rahane, as they aim for their first win of the season against Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab.

Defeating Punjab Kings will not be an easy task for KKR. Punjab has won both of their matches this season and currently occupies fourth place in the standings. Their batting lineup is explosive, featuring openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, along with Cooper Connolly and captain Shreyas Iyer. The bowling attack, led by Arshdeep Singh, Javier Bartlett, Vijay Kumar Vaishak, and Yuzvendra Chahal, is equally formidable. Marco Jansen and Marcus Stoinis provide a balanced approach to both batting and bowling, making Punjab a strong contender.

KKR needs to improve in both batting and bowling departments. Apart from captain Rahane and Angkrish Raghuwanshi, only Rinku Singh has contributed runs. Their bowling has also been a weak point. To secure two points against Punjab, KKR must deliver a powerful team performance.

Eden Gardens is known for its batting-friendly pitch. The fast outfield makes scoring easier. The surface is flat, allowing the ball to come onto the bat well, enabling batsmen to play freely. Fast bowlers may find some assistance early on, but as the game progresses, the pitch tends to slow down, favoring spinners. The small boundaries and dew factor often make chasing targets easier.

Weather conditions may pose a challenge for both KKR and PBKS. According to the weather department, rain could impact the match. Cloud cover is expected throughout the day, with a chance of rain. Strong winds and thunderstorms could also disrupt play. There is a 40% chance of rain between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, which may rise to 50% in the following hour before gradually decreasing at night. Such conditions increase the likelihood of a shortened match.

Historically, KKR has the upper hand in their encounters with Punjab, having won 21 out of 35 matches, while Punjab has secured 13 victories. One match between the two teams has been abandoned.

KKR’s probable playing XI: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuwanshi (wicketkeeper), C Green, RK Singh, Ramandeep Singh, SP Narine, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy, Kartik Tyagi, Blessing Muzarabani.

Punjab Kings’ probable playing XI: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wicketkeeper), Cooper Connolly, S Iyer (captain), Shashank Singh, MP Stoinis, M Jansen, Javier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh, Vijay Kumar Vaishak, Yuzvendra Chahal.
