
Hansi, August 18: International boxer Narendra Berwal, a resident of Sorakhi village in Hansi district, has been selected for the prestigious Arjuna Award. This announcement has sparked a wave of joy throughout the district. Family members, villagers, and sports enthusiasts celebrated this achievement by sharing sweets with one another.
Narendra expressed immense happiness upon receiving the news of his selection for the Arjuna Award. He stated that he will continue to strive to win medals for the nation and the state, as representing the country in sports is a matter of pride. Such recognition further enhances his joy, and he is committed to upholding the honor of the tricolor through hard work.
He believes that a player who diligently follows hard work, discipline, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and the advice of a coach can certainly achieve success.
Narendra’s parents, Jagdish Berwal and Roshni Devi, expressed their pride in his selection for the Arjuna Award. They remarked that this is a matter of pride for the entire Sorakhi village and Hansi district. The family hopes that Narendra will also win a gold medal for India in the upcoming Asian Games and Olympics, elevating the country’s honor.
Having won a silver medal in the over 90 kg category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, Narendra has once again proven his mettle, leading to his selection for the Arjuna Award.
Notably, in every major competition he has participated in, Narendra has secured medals for the country, showcasing his talent. His achievements include a bronze medal at the Asian Games, a silver at the Youth World Championship, a bronze at the Youth Asian Championship, and a gold medal at the National Games 2025.
Narendra began boxing in 2009, fueled by a nutritious diet of milk, yogurt, and halwa. After completing his matriculation, he focused entirely on boxing. Under the guidance of coach Devaraj at the Bhiwani Boxing Academy, he worked hard and practiced consistently, elevating his game to new heights.
In 2013, Narendra joined the Indian Army and subsequently represented India in several international competitions. He won a silver medal at the Philippines Youth World Cup 2012, another silver at the Armenia Youth Asian Championship 2013, and a silver medal at the Military World Games 2015, proving his talent. He later added a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Games and a gold medal at the European Cup just six months later to his list of accomplishments.
At the Commonwealth Games 2026, Narendra showcased an impressive performance in the over 90 kg category. After winning the quarter-finals, he secured a spot in the finals despite losing to England’s Demar Thomas with a score of 0-5, earning a silver medal for the country.
After winning the silver medal, Narendra stated that his journey is far from over. His next goal is to win a gold medal for India at the Asian Games and the Olympics. He attributes his success to 16 years of hard work, discipline, and continuous practice.
