London, August 18: Alex Albon will continue with Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season. He has decided to secure his future with the team, which is currently facing challenges under new technical regulations in the sport.
Williams announced this decision as a one-year contract extension, reflecting a “renewed commitment.” However, Albon’s existing multi-year agreement was already believed to extend through 2027. Reports indicate that this confirmation relates more to an exit clause in his contract than a completely new deal.
According to a report from Xinhua, the 30-year-old Thai driver, born in London, has been racing for Williams since 2022 and will enter his sixth season with the team next year. Albon’s decision comes after a challenging season for Williams, which currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship after 11 races. This decline follows a fifth-place finish in 2025, which exceeded expectations.
Albon stated, “It’s hard to put into words the changes this team has made. A tough year doesn’t show the full picture, and it motivates me to continue striving for great achievements alongside the factory and fans. Our story isn’t over yet, so my full focus is on doing whatever it takes to get us back up the grid.”
Williams viewed the new regulations set to take effect in 2026 as an opportunity for a significant step forward under team principal James Vowles, who has implemented extensive changes since joining in 2023.
Instead, their FW48 car has proven disappointing, leaving Williams far behind their hopes. Nevertheless, Albon expressed confidence in the team’s direction due to recent hires and investments. He remarked, “We’ve brought in some of the best people in the organization and focused on areas where we know we have struggled as a team.”
With limited options available due to a lack of vacancies in the larger F1 teams, Albon had little choice but to remain with Williams, especially as his teammate Carlos Sainz has outperformed him over the past year.
Despite recent struggles, Vowles highlighted Albon as a key figure in Williams’ rebuilding project. He said, “Alex has been a leader in this change project from day one, and there are many tasks we are still committed to completing. Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid, and he knows how much progress we’ve made in recent years. Re-signing him shows how much faith we have in the direction we’re heading.”
Williams is expected to introduce a significant upgrade at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, although team members have tempered expectations regarding any major improvement in the competitiveness of the FW48.
