New Delhi, April 5: Inter Miami CF played its historic home opener on April 5 at their new, modern stadium. The match against Austin FC ended in a 2-2 draw.
Austin FC started aggressively, taking the lead in the sixth minute. Guilherme Biro scored a stunning goal, putting the visitors ahead 1-0. However, Inter Miami quickly responded. Team captain Lionel Messi scored a remarkable header from inside the box, marking the club’s first historic goal and leveling the score at 1-1. This was also Messi’s first goal of the MLS season.
By the end of the first half, both teams remained tied. In the second half, Austin FC scored again in the 53rd minute, increasing the pressure on Inter Miami. Yet, the team refused to give up. In the final stages of the match, coach Javier Mascherano made a strategic change by bringing Luis Suárez onto the field.
Suárez justified the coach’s trust by scoring a brilliant goal in the 82nd minute following a corner, equalizing the score at 2-2. This was his first goal of the season, ensuring that Inter Miami secured at least one point in their new stadium.
After the match, Mascherano acknowledged that the team took significant risks in the last 20-25 minutes but emphasized the importance of playing aggressively at home. He also stated that the team aims to maintain its champion status.
Despite the draw, this was a positive start for Inter Miami. The club has already won major titles like the MLS Cup 2025, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, and the Leagues Cup 2023, and is eager to make this new beginning even more memorable.
