Inmate Commits Suicide at Patiala Jail During Rehabilitation Treatment
A Patiala inmate undergoing treatment at a de-addiction center reportedly took his own life. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
Patiala, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident unfolded at the Patiala jail when an inmate, identified as Vishal Awasthi, reportedly committed suicide while receiving treatment at the facility’s de-addiction center. DSP Jangjeet Singh Randhawa confirmed the news, stating that the exact cause of death is still under investigation.
Awasthi had been incarcerated since September 22, 2026, following an FIR lodged under the NDPS Act at the Derabassi police station in Mohali. Known to be struggling with addiction, he had expressed a desire to quit, leading to his admission into the in-house rehabilitation program where he was receiving regular medication.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night around 2 AM when Awasthi was found hanging in the bathroom of his barrack. Another inmate discovered him while using the restroom and alerted the pharmacist on duty, who is present 24 hours a day. Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate him, Awasthi could not be saved.
Currently, no suicide note has been found, and authorities are working to uncover the reasons behind this tragic event. In a separate incident, a suicide was reported in Uttar Pradesh, where a man named Abhishek Ram took his life in a garden in the Ballia-Gadwar area. Local police have since taken possession of the body for post-mortem examination.
The investigations into both cases are ongoing as authorities seek to understand the circumstances surrounding these distressing events.
