New Delhi, April 15: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now playing a crucial role in identifying the early risk of melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer. This claim emerged from a new study released on Wednesday.
The research is based on extensive registration data linked to the adult population in Sweden. It includes information on age, gender, medical history, medication use, and socio-economic status.
The analysis covered data from over 6 million individuals, with approximately 0.64 percent developing melanoma within five years.
According to researchers, better utilization of existing data in healthcare systems can help identify individuals at higher risk for this cancer in the future. Martin Gillstedt, a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska Academy, stated, “This method is not yet part of routine healthcare services, but its results clarify the future direction.”
The study compared various AI models, revealing that advanced models accurately identified risks in about 73 percent of cases, while age and gender alone accounted for roughly 64 percent.
The research also indicated that combining medical history, medication, and social factors could help identify small groups at a 33 percent risk of melanoma within the next five years.
Dermatologist Sam Polesis noted, “Identifying such high-risk groups for targeted screening can enhance disease monitoring accuracy and optimize healthcare resources. This approach is seen as a significant step towards ‘precision medicine.’”
However, experts emphasize the need for further research and policy decisions before widespread implementation of this technology. Nonetheless, the study suggests that AI models trained on large datasets could make personal risk assessments and cancer screening strategies more effective in the future.
