Indias Labor Force Participation Rate Remains Steady in March

New Delhi, April 15: According to a statement released by the Ministry of Statistics on Wednesday, India’s Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and older remained nearly stable in March 2026. It recorded a slight decline from 55.9 percent in February to 55.4 percent in March.

The statement from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation noted that the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for the same age group also remained stable in March, standing at 52.6 percent overall.

In urban areas, the WPR was 46.8 percent in March, down from 47.0 percent in February. In rural areas, this figure decreased from 56.3 percent in February to 55.5 percent in March.

Previously released data indicated a strong recovery in the urban job market in February 2026, with increased participation from women and a reduction in the unemployment rate.

Employment and unemployment figures are collected through the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). This survey serves as the primary source for understanding employment conditions in the country.

Since January 2025, the methodology of this survey has been revised to enable the release of employment-related data on a monthly and quarterly basis.

The monthly results of the PLFS are published in bulletins that provide key indicators such as LFPR, WPR, and the Unemployment Rate (UR). Bulletins from April 2025 to February 2026 have already been released, with the March 2026 bulletin being the twelfth in this series.

These nationwide statistics are based on information gathered from a total of 374,879 individuals, including 213,679 from rural areas and 161,200 from urban regions.
