Indias First Salt Container Train Launched in Gujarat
Indian Railways has launched the countrys first salt container train, enhancing logistics for the salt industry in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : In a groundbreaking initiative, Indian Railways has inaugurated the country’s first dedicated salt container train, connecting the Kutch region’s Gati Shakti cargo terminal to Mithapur. This service, which commenced on September 15, aims to establish an efficient transportation system that not only preserves the quality of salt but also enhances loading capacity and reduces logistics costs.
The special train facilitates the easier transport of salt from Gujarat’s Kutch region to various parts of the country. Designed with unique, lightweight stainless steel containers, these vehicles allow for the top filling and side unloading of salt. This design helps achieve an optimal balance between the container and the salt’s weight, enabling the transport of larger quantities.
Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister, Harsh Sanghvi, praised this initiative as a transformative step in salt transportation. He shared images of the train heading to Mithapur on social media, highlighting its role in ensuring better salt quality, increased loading capacity, and more efficient, weather-resistant transport.
The stainless steel construction of these containers protects the salt from rain and moisture during transit. This novel transportation option significantly boosts the local salt industry, addressing longstanding challenges associated with salt logistics while simultaneously lowering costs for those involved in the industry.
Overall, this new system effectively reduces issues related to the loading, unloading, and handling of salt, promising economic benefits for the sector.
