India’s defence technology ecosystem saw its highest-ever annual funding in 2025, reaching 247 million US dollars. This significant milestone was revealed in a report released on Wednesday by data intelligence platform Traxcn.
The report highlights that since 2016, equity funding in the defence tech sector has grown from just 5 million dollars to a peak of 247 million dollars in 2025. Overall, 711 million dollars have been invested across 232 funding rounds to date.
Despite a reduction in the number of funding rounds to 30 in 2025, the total funding almost doubled compared to the previous year, largely driven by a single mega funding round worth 100 million dollars.
The distribution of funds across different stages shows that early-stage companies secured the majority. Seed-stage firms raised approximately 118 million dollars across 174 rounds, early-stage companies obtained 527 million dollars in 56 rounds, while late-stage funding accounted for 66 million dollars through five rounds.
The capital allocation within the defence technology value chain reveals a strong preference for infrastructure-related sectors. Non-combat systems attracted the largest share with 551 million dollars, followed by combat weapon systems at 106 million dollars. Defence support and enabling systems, as well as training and simulation solutions, each received 27 million dollars.
Among cities, Bengaluru emerged as the top recipient of defence tech funding with 216 million dollars over 61 rounds. Noida and Chennai followed with 168 million dollars in 19 rounds and 88 million dollars in 26 rounds, respectively.
According to the Traxcn report, India’s defence technology ecosystem is evolving from fragmented innovations to performance-driven capabilities and infrastructure. The sector now extends beyond standalone platforms to integrated systems incorporating artificial intelligence, autonomy, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), secure communications, and manufacturing capabilities.
