Nishin, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women’s cricket team showcased a commanding performance on September 18, defeating Japan by 8 wickets in the quarterfinals of the Asian Games. The match took place at Korogi Sports Park, where India’s bowlers excelled, limiting Japan to just 57 runs in 19.5 overs.
After winning the toss, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur opted to bowl first. This decision paid off as Japan struggled against the Indian attack. Only two players, Haruna Iwasaki and Ayaka Kato Stafford, managed to reach double figures. Iwasaki scored 10 runs off 22 balls, while Kato made 25 runs from 47 balls. The rest of the batting lineup faltered against India’s bowlers.
Shri Charani was particularly impressive, taking 4 wickets for just 10 runs in her 4 overs. Shefali Verma contributed with 2 wickets, while Shreyanka Patil and Deepti Sharma each took 1 wicket.
Chasing a modest target of 58 runs, India reached 59 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in just 5 overs. Opener Shefali Verma led the charge with a quickfire 40 runs off 15 balls, hitting 2 sixes and 6 fours. Richa Ghosh supported her with an unbeaten 12 runs from 6 balls. However, G. Kamalini and Bharti Phoolmali were dismissed for 0 and 6 runs, respectively.
With this victory, India secured a place in the semifinals, where they will face Bangladesh on September 20. Bangladesh advanced after their match against China was called off due to rain, allowing them to qualify based on their ICC ranking.
India and Bangladesh recently clashed in the semifinals of the 2026 Asia Cup in Dubai, where India emerged victorious and later won the final against Sri Lanka.
