Spectacular Opening Ceremony Marks Launch of 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya
The 2026 Asian Games opened in Nagoya with a vibrant ceremony, showcasing athletes and cultural performances from across Asia.

Nagoya, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : The 20th Asian Games officially kicked off on September 19, 2026, at the Mizuhō Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya. Athletes from across Asia gathered for this momentous occasion, marking the start of one of the continent’s largest sporting events.
The opening ceremony transformed the stadium into a dazzling spectacle, filled with colorful lights and impressive cultural performances. Amidst the festive atmosphere, discussions of medals and competitions momentarily took a backseat as athletes and spectators reveled in the historic moment.
Japan’s Emperor Naruhito declared the commencement of the continental sporting event, which will see thousands of athletes participating over the next two weeks. India had its own unique representation at the event, led by two distinguished athletes: Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker and kabaddi star Pawan Sehrawat. Holding the Indian flag high, this duo embodied the hopes and memories of India’s record-breaking campaign at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Bhaker’s presence added an Olympic flair to the ceremony, while Sehrawat represented one of India’s most successful traditional sports. He had previously been part of the Indian kabaddi team that won gold in the last Asian Games. Initially, shot putter Tejinderpal Singh Toor was set to be the male flag bearer, but a last-minute technical issue prevented his participation. This unexpected change thrust Sehrawat into the spotlight and added a twist to the carefully planned evening. However, as the Indian contingent entered the stadium, the last-minute switch became a minor detail.
The Indian flag waved proudly as athletes greeted the crowd, capturing a moment that will be etched in the memories of the Nagoya Games. The ceremony focused more on narrating Japan’s story than on the competition itself. Traditional Japanese elements blended with modern performances, technology, and music, creating a celebration that sought to connect the country’s rich heritage with its contemporary identity. The presence of the Emperor and Empress further underscored the significance of the event.
Outside the stadium, Nagoya city had been preparing for days to welcome athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts from across Asia. Inside, the atmosphere was festive, with vibrant lights, music, and cultural displays making the opening ceremony truly memorable.
For the athletes, however, the real journey was just beginning. The ceremony provided them with a unique opportunity to pause, stand together, and experience the Games as a united community. Soon, they would return to the familiar world of goals, timing, strategies, points, and medals.
India has arrived in Nagoya, but memories of Hangzhou remain fresh. At the 2023 Asian Games, India achieved a historic milestone, winning 107 medals, including 28 golds. That performance raised both standards and expectations. Yet, every Asian Games tells its own story. Some chapters will feature well-known champions, while others will highlight athletes participating in their first continental Games, all hoping to create memorable moments in their careers through a second, a match, a lift, or a final.
