New Delhi, March 18: The Uber Cup badminton team championship will take place in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3. Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams have received favorable draws in the group stages of this championship.
The Indian teams are seeded eighth based on individual player world rankings and are placed in Group A alongside the reigning champions and top seeds, China.
As the 2022 Thomas Cup champions, India is a strong contender for one of the two quarter-final spots from Group A, which also includes Pan Am champions Canada and Oceania champions Australia.
However, the path to the knockout stages is more challenging for the women’s team, as they are grouped with the European Team Championship runners-up Denmark and bronze medalists Ukraine.
The Indian men’s team made history by winning the Thomas Cup in 2022, while the women’s team secured bronze medals in the 2014 and 2016 editions. The upcoming Thomas Cup will be the 34th edition, while the Uber Cup returns for its 31st edition. Each tournament will feature 16 teams divided into four groups of four.
Teams in each group will compete in matches consisting of five games—three singles and two doubles. The top two countries from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
Sanjay Mishra, Secretary General of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), commented on the draw for this prestigious team championship, stating, “We have received a good draw. We have a chance to reach the quarter-finals in both the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup. Our strong team has proven it can defeat any top team. Once we reach the quarter-finals, anything is possible.”
