New Delhi, May 7: India’s four-member men’s team is set to make a strong impression at the World Squash Championship, starting Friday in Giza, Egypt. The prestigious tournament, organized by the Professional Squash Association, will be led by Abhay Singh. He will be joined by Veer Chotrani, Ramit Tandon, and Velavan Senthilkumar in this challenging competition.
The championship will take place from May 8 to 16 at the Palm Hills Club and PGC Golf Central Mall in Giza. It will feature many top-ranked players, including current world number one Mustafa Asal and leading female player Hania El Hammamy.
In the men’s singles draw, Abhay Singh, ranked 22nd in the world, faces a tough match right from the start against fellow Indian player Veer Chotrani. The winner of this match will likely encounter either defending champion Mustafa Asal or Germany’s Raphael Kandra in the second round, presenting an even greater challenge.
Velavan Senthilkumar also has a difficult opener, going up against France’s sixth-seeded Victor Crouin, who is currently ranked fifth globally. Meanwhile, Ramit Tandon will kick off his campaign against Egypt’s Karim El Torky. The Indian player, ranked 40th, aims to advance by defeating the higher-ranked Egyptian.
Last year, India exited early in the Chicago edition of the tournament, with Abhay Singh, Veer Chotrani, and Ramit Tandon all losing in tough matches, while Velavan Senthilkumar was eliminated in the first round by Peru’s Diego Elias.
Notably, promising young Indian female player Anahat Singh will not participate in this year’s competition. India continues to seek its first medal in the singles category at the World Squash Championship, with hopes of achieving success before squash makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
