New Delhi, March 5: The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, unveiled the logo for the world’s first franchise-based road cycling league on Thursday. He described this initiative as a significant step towards transforming cycling in the country. Mandaviya emphasized that this moment is crucial for Indian sports.
He stated, “This unveiling marks an important moment for Indian sports. By launching the world’s first franchise-based road cycling league, we are not just organizing races; we are creating a professional ecosystem that will nurture talent. This initiative will attract global attention and align with our vision of a fit and vibrant India.”
The Minister further noted that this initiative builds on the momentum from recent professional cycling events in the country and aims to inspire young Indians to embrace the sport. He mentioned, “Whether it’s the Pune Grand Tour, the league in Ahmedabad, or Sunday on Cycle events held weekly across various locations, I believe these efforts will establish cycling as a recognized sport in India.”
The upcoming league will feature franchises from eight cities or regions, each comprising ten cyclists. Each team will include two international riders, bringing global expertise and competition, alongside two junior cyclists aimed at promoting emerging Indian talent and ensuring the sport’s long-term sustainability.
This competition will unfold in three phases, culminating in a grand finale. It will include various race formats such as criterium races, team time trials, and mass start events, designed to offer both strategic competition and thrilling visuals for spectators. This initiative is also rooted in the remarkable resurgence of professional cycling in India in recent years.
