New Delhi, March 24: Indian Railways has approved two significant infrastructure projects in Gujarat and Bihar, with a total investment of approximately ₹647.58 crore. The aim of these projects is to enhance connectivity, alleviate traffic issues, and improve railway operations.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the projects include the construction of a Rail Over Rail (ROR) flyover in Kosamba, Gujarat, and a new railway bypass in Bhagalpur, Bihar.
In Gujarat, a Rail Over Rail flyover will be built for the Kosamba-Umrapada section (9.20 km) at a cost of ₹344.38 crore. This project falls under the Western Railway and is located on the Mumbai-Vadodara main line, where gauge conversion work is currently underway.
The Ministry of Railways stated that due to the presence of a Dedicated Freight Corridor on this route, direct connections to the main line are not feasible. Once the flyover is completed, surface crossings will be eliminated, resulting in safer and smoother train operations.
In Bihar, a 13.38 km long railway bypass will be constructed in Bhagalpur at a cost of ₹303.20 crore. This bypass will connect the Gonudham Halt (Barahat-Bhagalpur section) to Sabour (Bhagalpur-Sahibganj section) under Eastern Railway.
The Ministry indicated that this project will help reduce the increasing traffic at Bhagalpur Junction, where train operations currently exceed capacity (over 125%). Presently, trains must reverse their engines to change direction, causing delays and operational challenges. The new bypass will expedite train movement and improve punctuality.
The Ministry of Railways emphasized that these projects are part of a larger plan to enhance the capacity of the railway network and reduce congestion, thereby better addressing the growing demands for passenger and freight transport while also improving safety and efficiency.
