New Delhi, May 18: The Indian Navy’s Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar departed from Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Monday after a three-day port call. This journey has further strengthened the maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka. It also advances India’s vision for the Indian Ocean region, focusing on mutual progress, security, and development.
After leaving Colombo, the ‘Sagar’ conducted a passage military exercise with the Sri Lankan Navy’s warship Nandimithra. The exercise included tactical maneuvers and communication drills aimed at enhancing coordination, maritime operational capabilities, and interoperability between the two navies. The IOS Sagar is now en route to Kochi. This mission is considered a vital part of India’s efforts to promote maritime cooperation, friendship, and collective security among partner nations in the Indian Ocean region.
During its stay in Colombo, the commanding officer of the IOS Sagar met with senior officials of the Sri Lankan Navy. They engaged in significant discussions aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation, strengthening regional security, and ensuring safe sea routes in the Indian Ocean. A deck reception was also held aboard the Indian ship, which became a highlight of the visit, attended by naval officers, diplomats, and distinguished guests. This event fostered professional relationships and a spirit of regional collaboration among multinational naval forces.
The ship is not only crewed by Indian personnel but also includes sailors from 16 other countries. This multinational team is on an operational deployment mission in the Indian Ocean region. The IOS Sagar arrived at Colombo port on May 15, escorted by a Sri Lankan naval vessel upon entering Sri Lankan waters. During outreach activities in Colombo, senior Sri Lankan Navy officials, local schoolchildren, and members of the Indian community visited the IOS Sagar, where they were warmly welcomed.
Visitors had the opportunity to closely observe and experience the ship’s operational capabilities and naval life. Several professional and cultural programs were organized during this stop. A friendly volleyball match was played between the Sri Lankan Navy and the crew of the IOS Sagar, enhancing camaraderie between the two forces. Additionally, the multinational crew toured the cultural sites of Galle and Kandy, gaining insights into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
