Indian Government Approves Continuation of National Social Assistance Program

The Indian government has approved funding for the National Social Assistance Program, benefiting millions across the country.

Surat, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government has approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP) for the next five years, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A budget of ₹53,428 crore has been allocated for this initiative. This decision ensures that approximately 32 million beneficiaries nationwide will continue to receive financial assistance.

The NSAP aims to provide social security to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, widows, and individuals with disabilities. Dr. Kanubhai Taylor, founder and chairman of the Disabled Welfare Trust of India and a Padma Shri awardee based in Surat, welcomed the government’s decision. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, highlighting the importance of this step for the welfare of people with disabilities.

Dr. Taylor noted that financial support can significantly aid those facing employment challenges due to disabilities, enabling them to live with dignity. He emphasized the long-standing need for social security and economic assistance for disabled individuals, mentioning that eligibility criteria in the past were quite strict. The recent decision to set the disability threshold at 40 percent is a crucial development, allowing more people to benefit from the program. Individuals with this level of disability often encounter numerous obstacles in securing jobs and livelihoods.

He stated, “The government should have taken this step much earlier, but unfortunately, it has not received adequate attention until now. Prime Minister Modi understands the need to take action for people with disabilities.” Dr. Taylor praised the Prime Minister as a visionary leader committed to improving the lives of disabled individuals.

Recalling a past meeting with Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Dr. Taylor shared that they discussed the need to work for the welfare of disabled people shortly after he took office. He believes that the current efforts under Modi’s leadership continue to reflect that initial vision. Dr. Taylor expressed hope that programs related to social security would consistently support those in need.

He further added that regular financial assistance for the elderly helps them meet daily needs, allowing them to live with greater dignity rather than relying entirely on others.
