Indian Army Successfully Defuses World War II Bomb in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, March 25: In a remarkable operation, the Indian Army successfully defused a World War II-era bomb weighing approximately 227 kilograms in Baharagora, East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. The bomb, believed to have been dropped during the war, was discovered buried in the sand of the Subarnarekha River.

The discovery of this powerful bomb during sand excavation just five to six days ago put local authorities and security agencies on high alert. The presence of the bomb created an atmosphere of insecurity and uncertainty in the area, especially after images of local youths posing with the bomb went viral.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, a specialized team from the Indian Army was dispatched to the site. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Dharmendra Singh and Captain Ayush Kumar Singh, the team meticulously studied the bomb’s structure, its location, and the surrounding geography.

To safely neutralize the bomb, a scientific approach was adopted. A pit approximately 10 feet deep was excavated using a JCB, and hundreds of sand-filled bags were used to create a safety barrier to control the blast pressure. Additionally, the entire area was sealed off within a radius of about one and a half kilometers, and nearby homes and fields were evacuated.

By Tuesday morning, the site had transformed into a fortified zone. Teams from the police, Jharkhand Jaguar, fire department, and health department were on standby with ambulances. All access routes to the river were barricaded to ensure that no civilians could approach during the operation.

The Army’s bomb squad team ultimately neutralized the bomb through a controlled explosion. The operation was entirely successful, with no casualties reported. Experts noted that old bombs buried in rivers can be extremely dangerous, and even a minor mistake could lead to a major disaster. During this operation, another bomb was discovered by villagers who had brought it home after finding it in the river. The Army also successfully defused this bomb.

For over a week, villages along the banks of the Subarnarekha River had been gripped by fear, with residents avoiding the river, impacting daily life and livestock. Following the successful completion of the operation, villagers breathed a sigh of relief.
