
New Delhi, June 2: Indian citizens traveling to other countries with a layover at German airports will no longer need a transit visa. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed its approval of this announcement made by the German Embassy in India.
The Ministry stated on the social media platform X, “We welcome Germany’s announcement to waive the transit visa requirement for Indian citizens passing through Germany by air, effective June 3. This decision follows discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz during the latter’s visit to India in January 2026. This new arrangement will enhance people-to-people connections between India and Germany.”
The German Embassy in New Delhi confirmed that the announcement regarding the removal of the transit visa requirement for Indian citizens was published in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on June 2 and will come into effect on June 3.
The public gazette of the Federal Republic stated, “This is a result of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January this year. It reflects the federal government’s commitment to deepen German-Indian relations, facilitate the movement of people, and strengthen economic ties.”
During this visit, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz welcomed the continuous increase in mutual trade and investment, noting that trade between the two countries reached record highs in 2024 and is expected to continue thriving through 2025.
India and Germany have signed several agreements in sectors such as trade, technology, health, and renewable energy. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides finalized 19 agreements and made several policy announcements aimed at deepening strategic, economic, and people-to-people cooperation.
Both leaders reaffirmed their strong support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and emphasized its potential to reshape and enhance global commerce, connectivity, and prosperity. They also looked forward to taking concrete steps to advance this initiative during the first IMEEC ministerial meeting.
