New Delhi, July 16: The second ODI match of the series between India and England is set to take place on Thursday, July 16, at the Sophia Gardens international test cricket stadium in Cardiff, Wales. This venue has historically favored the Indian team. Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, Team India aims to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
India has played a total of four matches in Cardiff, winning three and losing one. The last defeat for the Indian team at this ground occurred in 2011. Since then, they have won all three subsequent matches here, although their last appearance at this venue was in 2014. This means that Team India has not played a match here for the past 12 years.
In the first ODI of the series, the Indian team’s performance was impressive. Thanks to the exceptional bowling of Axar Patel, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Barar, India managed to restrict England to 258 runs. Captain Shubman Gill also shone with the bat, scoring a solid 80 runs off 75 balls.
Washington Sundar (not out 52 runs) and Axar Patel (not out 57 runs) also contributed with half-centuries. Shreyas Iyer chipped in with 35 runs, but both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had disappointing outings. Rohit scored only 11 runs, while Kohli was dismissed for 5 runs by Jofra Archer. The Indian team will look to maintain its excellent form in the second ODI.
On the other hand, England had a dismal outing in the first ODI. Besides Joe Root and Liam Dawson, the rest of the batting lineup struggled to score runs. Root managed an unbeaten 76, while Dawson scored 68 runs. Jacob Bethel, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, and Will Jacks failed to make a significant impact with the bat. The bowling unit also appeared out of sync.
