New Delhi: The defence partnership between India and the United States is set to strengthen further following the signing of a landmark 10-year defence agreement in 2025, said US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, on Wednesday.
Speaking after a meeting with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and other senior officials, Ambassador Gore highlighted the pact’s role in deepening bilateral ties. In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, “Last year, the US and India signed a 10-year defence pact, which will significantly deepen our defence partnership. Joint exercises will continue, and additional sales are underway. This is a strong relationship! Thanks to Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh for hosting us.”
Earlier, on Sunday, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met a three-member US Congressional delegation comprising two Republicans and one Democrat. The discussions focused on trade and security issues between the two nations.
Minister Jaishankar described the meeting as productive in a post on X, saying, “We discussed various aspects of India-US relations, the Indo-Pacific region, and the Ukraine conflict. Congressional engagement has always been a key dimension of our relationship.”
Ambassador Gore noted that the talks were constructive, emphasizing a focus on strengthening bilateral ties in security, trade, and critical technology sectors.
In October 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth met in Malaysia during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). It was on this occasion that the two countries signed the decade-long defence partnership agreement.
According to officials, this pact marks the beginning of a new phase in the already robust defence relationship between India and the US.
The Defence Ministry issued a statement saying, “The 2025 framework represents a new chapter to transform the partnership over the next ten years. It aims to provide a unified vision and policy direction to deepen defence cooperation.”
Both leaders praised the ongoing momentum in bilateral defence collaboration and reiterated their commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships across all pillars.
Secretary Hegseth reaffirmed that India remains a priority country for US defence cooperation, and Washington is committed to working with New Delhi to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The ministry further stated, “India and the US continue to enhance and deepen defence ties through military-to-military exercises and activities, information sharing, collaboration with like-minded regional and global partners, defence industry cooperation, science and technology partnerships, and established defence cooperation mechanisms.”
