Male, March 29: The Indian U-20 men’s football team continued its impressive performance in the SAFF U-20 Championship 2026. They played to a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh, securing the top position in Group B.
Both teams started the match cautiously. Bangladesh attempted to break through the Indian defense by utilizing the width of the field, but India’s defense proved to be quite strong. Gradually, India gained control of the game and began creating opportunities from set pieces, including corners and free kicks.
India scored the first goal in the 17th minute, thanks to Vishnu Yadav, who executed a brilliant header from a corner kick. This marked his second goal in the tournament. However, Bangladesh did not give up and equalized during stoppage time of the first half, with Mohammad Abdul Riyad Fahim scoring a stunning goal to make it 1-1. Following this, both teams’ forwards made several attempts, but the defenses remained solid.
At the end of the first half, a foul led to a heated argument between players and staff from both teams. During this altercation, the coaches of Bangladesh and India’s goalkeeping coach received red cards.
In the second half, India displayed a more aggressive style of play and created multiple chances but failed to score. The team pushed for a win until the end, but Bangladesh’s defense held firm. Despite the draw, India faced no setbacks, having already secured a semifinal spot by defeating Pakistan 3-0. As a result, India topped the group, while Bangladesh finished in second place.
India’s next challenge will be against Bhutan in the semifinals, while Bangladesh will face Nepal in the other semifinal match.
