India to Host World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Expresses Delight

New Delhi, March 19: India has been awarded the hosting rights for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2028, as announced by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya. He shared the news on his social media platform, X, stating that the championship will take place in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

In his tweet, he expressed, β€œThe whole world is coming to India. I am thrilled to announce that Bhubaneswar in Odisha will host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is not only increasing its medal tally on the global stage but is also emerging as a major hub for hosting significant international sports events.”

The decision to host the championship was made during a meeting of World Athletics officials in Poland. This announcement comes just ahead of the 2025 competition, with the next event scheduled to take place in Torun, Poland, in 2026. The Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium in Bhubaneswar, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, will serve as the main venue for this prestigious event.

The Athletics Federation of India has confirmed the event, with the federation’s president stating that this will further enhance India’s international sports reputation. This will be the first time India hosts a major World Athletics Championship. The event is expected to not only boost interest among sports enthusiasts but also inspire young athletes and promote athletics across the country.

Adil Sumarivala, Vice President of World Athletics, mentioned that a two-member team from World Athletics visited the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar in January to assess the modern indoor facilities. Notably, New Zealand had also shown interest in hosting this championship prior to India’s selection. The World Athletics Indoor Championships are held every two years and typically feature 26 events, with 13 for men and 13 for women.
