India Shines at World Boxing Futures Cup with Victories from Joyshree, Ambecker, and Sahil

Bangkok, March 8: The Indian youth boxing team has made a remarkable start at the World Boxing Futures Cup 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. Joyshree Devi Chiroam, Ambecker Meitei Larenlakpam, and Sahil Duhan all secured victories on the tournament’s opening day.

In the women’s 54-kilogram category, Joyshree Devi Chiroam triumphed over her Tajikistani opponent with a referee-stopped contest (RSC) in the second round. In the men’s division, both Ambecker Meitei Larenlakpam (50 kilograms) and Sahil Duhan (60 kilograms) began their campaigns with unanimous 5-0 victories against competitors from the Philippines and China, respectively.

The Indian team is competing in the youth Olympic weight categories, making this tournament a crucial step for qualification and preparation for the Youth Olympic Games. The Futures Cup is a significant event on the global boxing calendar, providing young athletes with valuable international competition experience. The tournament runs from March 8 to 15, showcasing some of the most promising young boxers from around the world.

Last year, Indian youth boxers delivered a historic performance at the third Asian Youth Games in Bahrain, winning seven medals, including four golds, two silvers, and one bronze. This was India’s best performance in youth boxing on the continental stage. The Indian team aims to maintain its strong start in Bangkok.

India has fielded a 10-member team in both men’s and women’s divisions. The women’s team includes Gunjan (48 kilograms), Chandrika Bhoreshi Pujari (51 kilograms), Joyshree Devi Chiroam (54 kilograms), Radhamani Longjam (57 kilograms), and Prachi (60 kilograms). The men’s team features Ambecker Meitei Larenlakpam (50 kilograms), Udham Singh Raghav (55 kilograms), Sahil Duhan (60 kilograms), Aman Sivach (65 kilograms), and Priyansh Seherawat (70 kilograms).

Before the tournament, Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, stated, “The World Boxing Futures Cup is a vital platform for our young boxers to gain international exposure and compete against top talent from around the world. Competing in the youth Olympic weight categories makes this tournament even more significant, as it provides our athletes with valuable experience and preparation for the Youth Olympic Games. We are confident that this team will compete with determination and make the most of this opportunity.”
