
Ahmedabad, March 9: India made history on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium by scoring 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the T20 World Cup final. This innings featured a remarkable total of 37 boundaries, including 18 sixes and 19 fours, setting a new record for the most boundaries in a T20 World Cup final.
Previously, the record for the most sixes in a single innings of T20 World Cup history belonged to Sri Lanka, who hit 41 boundaries against Kenya in a group stage match in 2007. In the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026, India had already showcased their power by hitting 37 boundaries against England, while England managed 36 boundaries in that match.
The final match also saw India break the record for the most sixes in a T20 World Cup final. Earlier, in group stage matches, the Netherlands and West Indies both hit 19 sixes in their respective games against Ireland and Zimbabwe in 2014 and 2026. However, no team had previously hit 18 sixes in a final match before India.
Batting first after losing the toss, the Indian team got off to a great start, thanks to the opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who put together 98 runs in just 7.1 overs. Abhishek scored 52 runs off 21 balls, hitting 9 boundaries before returning to the pavilion.
Following this, Sanju and Ishan Kishan built a solid second-wicket partnership, adding 105 runs off 48 balls, pushing India past the 200-run mark. Samson scored 89 runs off 46 balls, including 8 sixes and 5 fours, while Ishan contributed 54 runs off 25 balls, with 4 sixes and 4 fours. In the final overs, Shivam Dube remained unbeaten with 26 runs off 8 balls, helping India reach a total of 255/5. From the opposition, James Neesham took the most wickets with 3, while Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra each claimed 1 wicket.
