New Delhi, March 12: India has firmly rejected claims that it delayed expressing condolences for the late Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by five days. During a press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urged individuals to refrain from making comments without proper information.
The ministry clarified that India had paid tribute to Khamenei, who passed away on February 28. Jaiswal noted that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signed the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy on March 5, the very first day it was opened.
“I want to clarify that the Foreign Secretary completed this formality on the very first day the condolence book was available. He expressed his condolences on March 5, which was the first day it was open. I would just like to say that people should gather necessary facts before making public comments. We should avoid comments made without information,” Jaiswal stated.
It is worth mentioning that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to sign the condolence book and express his sorrow over Khamenei’s death. Following this, he also met with Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Fathali to convey his sympathies.
The embassy invited the public to sign the condolence book in honor of the losses suffered by Iranians and their supporters worldwide. People visited the embassy to express their condolences on March 5, 6, and 9.
On March 11, the Iranian Embassy thanked India for its condolences. The condolence book was signed by politicians, senior officials, religious leaders, scholars, educators, and media personnel, all showing solidarity with Iran.
Ayatollah Khamenei, aged 86, died in a joint military strike by Israel and the United States. The U.S. later claimed that several top military officials were also killed in the attack, including Iran’s Defense Minister and the head of the IRGC.
Close family members of Khamenei, including his daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandson, were also killed in the attack. His wife later died from injuries sustained during the incident.
