India Kicks Off SAFF U-20 Championship Against Pakistan in High-Stakes Match

Malé, March 26: India’s U-20 men’s football team is set to begin its SAFF U-20 Championship campaign with a thrilling match against Pakistan at the National Football Stadium in Malé on Thursday.

India has been placed in Group B alongside Pakistan and Bangladesh. The team will face Bangladesh in their second match on March 28. With only two matches in the group, a single victory could be crucial for securing a spot in the semifinals.

In the opening match of Group B, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan 2-0. This result means that Pakistan must win on Thursday to keep their knockout hopes alive. Consequently, India may face a determined opponent, making this contest challenging despite their strong reputation.

The ‘Blue Colts’ have previously won the title in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025. On the other hand, Pakistan is known for its aggressive playing style and will aim to disrupt India’s rhythm. Many of their players are participating in only their second international match, indicating a lack of experience at this level.

India’s U-20 coach, Mahesh Gawali, emphasized the importance of starting the tournament on a positive note. He stated, “A match between India and Pakistan is always significant, but we are treating it like any other match. Every game is crucial for us. Our focus is on starting the tournament well and making a positive impression. We must remain vigilant and play with discipline and composure.”

Gawali added, “While we have some experienced players, this is a new beginning for everyone. Football does not rely on history; what matters is how you perform on the day. Therefore, we need to stay focused and deliver a strong performance. This championship also serves as preparation for the upcoming AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers, but our complete attention is on the current match. We want to focus on each game individually and give our best in this competition. Pakistan is a good team with strong synergy among their players and talented youth, but we will strive to perform at our best.”
