Amsterdam, August 22: In their first Pool E match of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026, the Indian team suffered a 1-3 defeat against co-hosts Netherlands. This loss significantly diminishes India’s hopes of advancing to the semifinals.
The first goal of the match came in the third quarter when Netherlands’ Duco Telgenkamp scored a brilliant field goal in the 41st minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, in the 42nd minute, India’s Shilanand Lakra received a green card.
The final quarter saw a flurry of goals. In the 51st minute, Jep Hoedemakers netted a second goal for the Netherlands, extending their lead to 2-0. However, just a minute later, Indian drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh scored a stunning goal, narrowing the score to 2-1 and igniting hopes for a comeback. During this minute, Netherlands’ Koen Bijen also received a green card. In the 55th minute, Thijs van Dam scored another goal for the Netherlands, sealing the match at 3-1 and dousing India’s hopes.
With the final whistle, the Netherlands secured their victory at 3-1. This win propels the co-hosts into the semifinals, while India must now win against Argentina and rely on the outcomes of the remaining Pool E matches to keep their hopes alive.
Following this result, the Netherlands tops the pool with six points, having added three more to the three points earned in the first stage, while India remains scoreless. India’s next match is against Argentina, who also have yet to earn any points.
England, with three points, will face Argentina later on Saturday. If England wins that match, India’s mathematical chances of reaching the semifinals will be extinguished.
