India Emphasizes Sustainable Development and Climate Action at UNESCAP Meeting

Bangkok, July 2: Jagpreet Kaur, the First Secretary at India’s embassy in Bangkok, addressed the ninth session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Committee on Environment and Development (CED9) on Thursday, highlighting India’s efforts to combat climate change.

The Indian embassy in Bangkok shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that Jagpreet Kaur delivered the country’s statement at the UNESCAP CED meeting.

The statement showcased India’s initiatives at national, regional, and international levels to tackle climate change. It included efforts such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the Lifestyle for the Environment (LIFE) movement, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA).

Additionally, it stressed the need for developing countries to receive adequate, timely, and reliable financial assistance to address climate change and adaptation challenges.

The Environment and Development Committee, a subsidiary body of UNESCAP, meets biennially to review regional trends, set priorities, and enhance collaboration among governments, civil society, the private sector, the UN system, and other international organizations.

The committee also provides recommendations to the commission. Every four years, it holds a ministerial-level meeting to offer high-level guidance.

According to UNESCAP, the CED-9 will review progress in priority areas established in the ministerial declaration of CED-7. Discussions will also focus on essential topics for the committee. This session will particularly emphasize better integration of policies and collaborative efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while addressing three major environmental crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
