New Delhi, April 15: American tech company OpenAI announced on Wednesday that India has become one of the world’s most advanced AI markets. The country excels particularly in coding, data analysis, and solving complex problems.
According to the company, based on ChatGPT Plus user engagement, India ranks among the top five countries globally in terms of per capita ‘thinking capability.’
India has developed into one of the fastest-growing ecosystems for AI developers. Following the launch of the Codex app in February 2026, user numbers surged fourfold within just two weeks.
However, AI usage in India is currently limited to a few major cities, with advanced applications concentrated in even fewer locations. This indicates significant potential for AI expansion in other parts of the country.
Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s International Managing Director, stated that the pressing question now is how quickly the benefits of AI can extend beyond major cities to the entire nation. Increasing outreach, promoting skill development, and enhancing the effective use of AI will be essential.
The report highlights that approximately 50% of AI users are concentrated in the country’s top 10 cities, which account for less than 10% of the total population.
The highest usage of ChatGPT has been observed in the Delhi-NCR region. Additionally, cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are emerging as significant AI hubs.
The report also noted that AI usage is rapidly increasing in sectors such as education and healthcare outside major cities, proving beneficial for the general populace.
However, there is a considerable disparity in advanced usage among cities. Data analysis is utilized 30 times more in large cities compared to smaller ones, while coding is used four times more, and Codex developers are nine times more prevalent.
