India Clinches T20 World Cup Title by Defeating New Zealand by 96 Runs

Ahmedabad, March 8: Team India has secured the T20 World Cup 2026 title. On Sunday, at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, the Indian team triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs. This victory marks India’s third T20 World Cup title, making them the first nation to win the tournament on home soil. Chasing a daunting target of 256 runs set by India, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs in just 19 overs.

New Zealand’s innings got off to a poor start. Finn Allen, who scored a century in the semifinals, was dismissed for just 9 runs by Axar Patel. Rachin Ravindra followed suit, scoring only 1 run before being out. Glenn Phillips also disappointed, managing just 5 runs. Mark Chapman was sent back to the pavilion by Hardik Pandya after scoring 3 runs. Daryl Mitchell continued his poor form, contributing only 17 runs.

Tim Seifert showed some resistance, scoring 52 runs off 26 balls before being caught by Ishan Kishan off Varun Chakravarthy’s bowling. Seifert hit 2 fours and 5 sixes during his innings. James Neesham could only add 8 runs, and Matt Henry did not get off the mark. Captain Mitchell Santner scored 43 runs off 35 balls. New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals, ultimately finishing their innings at 159 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler for India, claiming 4 wickets for just 15 runs in his 4 overs. Axar Patel took 3 wickets for 27 runs, while Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy picked up one wicket each.

Batting first after losing the toss, the Indian team got off to a blazing start, thanks to Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. The duo put together a massive 98-run partnership for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs. Abhishek played a brilliant innings, scoring 52 runs off 21 balls. Sanju Samson also shone, scoring 89 runs off 46 balls, hitting 5 fours and 8 sixes, making him the highest scorer in a T20 World Cup final.

Ishan Kishan, batting at number three, also displayed excellent form, scoring 54 runs off 25 balls with a strike rate of 216, including 4 fours and 4 sixes. However, Hardik Pandya and captain Suryakumar Yadav failed to make a significant impact. Suryakumar was dismissed without scoring, while Hardik managed 18 runs.

In the final overs, Shivam Dube contributed an unbeaten 26 runs off 8 balls, helping India reach a total of 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. This score is the highest in a knockout match in T20 World Cup history. With this victory, India has now won the T20 World Cup for the third time, following their wins in 2007 and 2024. Additionally, Team India has become the first team to win the T20 World Cup consecutively.
