New Delhi, February 12: India is closely monitoring the election results in Bangladesh before deciding its next steps.
Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a briefing on Thursday evening, “India supports fair, independent, and credible elections in Bangladesh. We should wait for the election results to understand the mandate before addressing any issues there.”
Jaiswal also mentioned that despite receiving an invitation, India did not send any election observers to Bangladesh.
In response to another question, he clarified, “We received an invitation to send observers, but we have not dispatched any to monitor the elections.”
Meanwhile, local media reported that violence erupted at several polling booths in Bangladesh on Thursday. A political party leader was killed during the voting process.
Incidents began to surface early Thursday morning as polling commenced, highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation and unstable security environment in Bangladesh.
Amid rising violence, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mohibuzzaman Kochi was reported dead at the Alia Madrasa polling station in Khulna district.
According to the prominent Bengali daily Jugantar, citing eyewitnesses and police, tensions escalated between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami near the polling center on Thursday morning.
Former BNP organizing secretary Yusuf Harun Majnu stated, “There was tension at the center from early morning. The principal of Alia Madrasa was campaigning for Jamaat. When attempts were made to stop him, he pushed Mohibuzzaman Kochi, causing him to collide with a tree, resulting in a head injury that led to his death.”
Confirming the incident, Khulna Sadar police station sub-inspector Khan Faisal Rafi stated, “As tensions escalated between both parties, we immediately went to the scene and separated them.”
Emergency medical officer Parth Roy at Khulna City Medical College Hospital informed Jugantar that BNP leader Kochi was brought to the hospital dead.
In another incident on Thursday morning, three people were injured during a cocktail bomb attack at a polling station in Gopalganj Sadar sub-district. This occurred at the Reshma International School polling station in Gopalganj district.
