India and Finland to Collaborate on Future Sectors and Strengthen Climate Change Relations: PM Modi

Oslo, May 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India met with his Finnish counterpart, Petteri Orpo, in Oslo on Tuesday. The meeting focused on exploring new opportunities for bilateral relations.

After the meeting, PM Modi expressed his pleasure in connecting with Prime Minister Orpo on the social media platform X. He noted, “This year has seen numerous events between India and Finland. PM Orpo himself visited India for the AI Impact Summit. Our meeting today aims to infuse new energy into the relationship between our two nations.”

He added, “We discussed collaboration in areas such as 6G, AI, education, nuclear energy, and other future sectors. We also talked about deepening our engagement in climate change, circular economy, sustainable development, and more.”

The Ministry of External Affairs announced that the leaders also declared their intention to co-host the World Circular Economic Forum in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, in September 2026.

According to the Ministry, both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among industries, research institutions, and academia. They highlighted the crucial roles of sustainability and digitalization in advancing future economic growth and development.

The Ministry reported that the leaders reviewed ongoing collaborations in trade and investment, digitalization, AI, 5G/6G, quantum technology, space, sustainability, renewable energy, circular economy, innovation, education, mobility, and people-to-people connections.

Both parties welcomed the continuous increase in bilateral trade in goods and services despite global challenges and reiterated their commitment to doubling existing bilateral trade by 2030.

The Ministry further noted, “Finland appreciated the significant contributions of Indian professionals to the growth of the technology sector and innovation.”

The Ministry stated that India and Finland share a strong, friendly, and multifaceted relationship based on shared democratic values. Finland is a key partner for India in the European Union and the Nordic region. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress of the India-EU strategic partnership and emphasized the importance of the timely implementation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
