New Delhi, March 20: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah in New Delhi on Friday. The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.
Jaishankar shared on the social media platform X that the primary focus of their conversation was to strengthen the ties between the two nations.
Just a day prior, India announced its commitment to continue supporting the energy needs of Bangladesh and other neighboring countries. However, this assistance is being balanced with India’s domestic requirements, refining capacity, and diesel availability.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a weekly press briefing that India has received requests for energy supplies from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and several other neighboring nations. He noted that India has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh through various means since 2007, and this support is ongoing.
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted maritime energy supply routes, raising concerns about LPG supply.
Jaiswal emphasized that India is currently prioritizing its domestic consumption and consumers. The needs of the Indian populace will be addressed first, after which the supply of LPG to commercial entities will be evaluated.
Earlier this month, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, held several meetings with ministers from the new government in Bangladesh. These discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
According to the Indian High Commission, Verma also met with Bangladesh’s Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Both parties agreed to enhance collaboration in areas such as local governance, rural economy, agricultural cooperation, and grassroots economic empowerment.
The High Commission stated that India-Bangladesh relations are built on strong interpersonal ties, and India is prepared to foster positive and constructive cooperation based on mutual interests and benefits.
Verma also met with Bangladesh’s Minister for Liberation War Affairs, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, during which they reaffirmed the historical connections related to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Both sides emphasized that mutual respect and trust are essential for further strengthening the relationship between the people of both nations.
