India and Africa Strengthen Renewable Energy Cooperation: Manohar Lal

New Delhi, March 21: Union Power Minister Manohar Lal stated on Saturday that India and Africa, representing nearly one-third of the world’s population, share common goals for inclusive, equitable, and future-ready development. He highlighted that renewable energy, grid modernization, energy storage, and institutional capacity building are key areas of cooperation between India and Africa.

Speaking at the ‘India-Africa Strategic Partnership Meet’ on the third day of the India Electric Summit 2026, the minister emphasized that electricity is essential for driving economic growth, ensuring a dignified life, and opening new opportunities. He referred to the concept of ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’ as a significant step towards global energy connectivity.

He noted that both regions are committed to achieving reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. The minister cited the collaboration between Africa50 and the Power Grid Corporation of India, particularly the Kenya Transmission Project, as an example of building robust infrastructure.

Referencing initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Africa. He stated that this partnership is not merely transactional but transformative and based on shared development.

The meeting also concluded that India and Africa will work together in areas such as renewable energy expansion, interconnected grid systems, energy storage technology, and capacity building.

Additionally, Union Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik emphasized the need to move the India-Africa partnership from mere ideas to practical implementation. He stressed the importance of ensuring affordable and sustainable energy for all.

Furthermore, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini identified sustainable development and improved water management as crucial foundations for progress in the state.

On this occasion, Africa50 CEO Alain Ebobisse stated that Africa needs investment rather than aid to achieve better outcomes and development. He mentioned that Africa is now focusing on investable projects, transmission expansion, and increasing private investment.
