New Delhi, March 8: Menstruation is a natural and normal process for women, not a disease. A balanced diet rich in iron and adequate rest can significantly alleviate fatigue, weakness, and other discomforts experienced during this time.
The National Health Mission (NHM) has urged women and adolescents to pay special attention to their health during menstruation. According to the NHM, blood loss during this period can lead to deficiencies in iron and other nutrients, resulting in fatigue, dizziness, weakness, or anemia.
The NHM emphasizes the necessity of a balanced diet during menstruation. Foods rich in iron, such as spinach, beets, pomegranates, jaggery, lentils, and dried fruits like raisins and dates, should be included in the diet. These foods help replenish blood levels and provide energy.
Additionally, consuming vitamin C-rich fruits like oranges, lemons, amla, guava, and tomatoes is beneficial, as they enhance iron absorption in the body. Green vegetables, whole grains, and yogurt also support digestion and reduce stomach cramps or bloating.
It is advisable to limit tea, coffee, or caffeine intake during this time, as they can hinder iron absorption. Sufficient rest and sleep are equally important. The body tends to feel more fatigued, so aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep. Light exercises such as walking, yoga, or pranayama can help relax the body and improve mood. Avoid heavy tasks or stress.
Maintaining hygiene during menstruation is crucial. Use clean pads or cloths, change them frequently, and wash hands thoroughly. If experiencing pain or unusual symptoms, consult a doctor.
