New Delhi, March 13: The summer season has officially arrived, bringing rising temperatures across many regions of the country. Experts recommend incorporating some simple tips into your daily routine to avoid heatwaves and heat strokes.
The National Health Mission (NHM) has specifically advised children, the elderly, and those with health issues to take precautions. By following basic guidelines, you can make the summer months safer and more comfortable.
According to the NHM, the most crucial tip is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, including lemon water, buttermilk, coconut water, or ORS solutions. Prevent dehydration, as it is the leading cause of heat strokes.
Another important consideration is your clothing. Wear light-colored, breathable cotton fabrics that help keep your body cool. Avoid dark or tight clothing, as they absorb more heat. Additionally, try to stay out of direct sunlight during peak hours, specifically between 11 AM and 4 PM. If you must go outside, carry an umbrella, wear a hat, sunglasses, and keep a wet cloth handy.
It’s also vital to monitor for symptoms of heat stroke. Signs such as sudden high fever, excessive sweating or lack of sweating, dizziness, nausea, headaches, fainting, rapid heartbeat, and red, dry skin require immediate attention. Move the affected person to a shaded area, provide water, and contact a doctor.
Don’t forget about pets; ensure they have access to shaded areas and plenty of water. Avoid heavy physical activities or exercise during extreme heat. Use fans, coolers, or air conditioning at home to maintain a comfortable environment. If severe symptoms arise, seek immediate medical assistance at the nearest health center or hospital.
